Oscar’s Cold Weather Battery Checklist: 5 Warning Signs Your Battery Is Failing

It is January in Franklin, and winter is not done with us yet. Oscar Loveless has already jumped three cars this week at Reliable Automotive.

“A battery that tested fine in October does not have the same power when it drops below freezing,” Oscar explains. “Cold weather can cut your battery capacity in half.”

Oscar has 45 years of experience under the hood. Here are the warning signs he looks for:

Slow Cranking

If your engine turns over slowly when you start it, your battery is struggling. This is the most common early warning sign.

Dim Headlights

Headlights that seem dimmer than usual, especially at idle, indicate your battery is not holding a full charge.

Dashboard Warning Light

That battery-shaped light on your dashboard is not decoration. If it flickers or stays on, pay attention.

Age Over 3 Years

Most batteries last 3-5 years. If yours is in that range, it is worth testing before the next cold snap.

Corrosion on Terminals

White or blue buildup on your battery terminals can prevent proper charging. This is easy to spot if you pop the hood.

Whether you are heading to Steel Magnolias this weekend or just getting the kids to school, take a few minutes to think about your battery.

Free battery tests this week. No appointment needed.
